For people to be passionate about work and to own their engagement, they need to find their work highly meaningful. Hierarchical managers aren’t going to make it for too long, says Anna Tavis, professor and academic director of human capital management at NYU. "We all have the same size tile on the (Zoom) screen," she said. If the pandemic's taught us anything, it's that companies will start rethinking hierarchy and require their managers to bring their whole humanity to the job, she said. That means listening, asking questions, being observant and adopting new ways of recruitment and embracing digital transformation.
